Baseball
Our History:
The history of Gee-Gees Baseball begins in September of 1995 when the team was founded by a group of University of Ottawa students. These students wanted to bring a team to the University and provide students a chance to keep playing baseball. In 2019, the program expanded by officially joining the OUA, and has been on an upwards trajectory ever since. The program has been steered by a number of exceptional head coaches throughout its history, which include: Larry Belanger, Matti Emery, Andrew Cockburn, and Roch Seguin. Currently the team is being led by head coach Roberto Suppa, who is one of the top coaches in Canada, and is looking to continue to lead the team into contender status in the OUA.
In 2022, the Gee-Gees had their most successful season in program history. Despite bringing in a large recruiting class and the team being mostly first-year players. Putting up a strong fight during pool play and making it to the East Regional Final, where the team fell to the eventual OUA Champions. In the three-team pool, Ottawa played the second and fourth ranked OUA teams, where the Gee-Gees defeated the eventual OUA Champions, providing a bye to the finals. Although the 2022 season did not end as desired, with a young team hungry to succeed and eager to develop, the Gee-Gees look to be a force in the OUA for the years to come.
What we do:
Gee-Gees Baseball provide students at the University of Ottawa the opportunity to play high-level baseball while completing their post-secondary education. The OUA season begins during the first week of September and carries on until the second week of October when Regionals start. Over these 6 weeks, the team plays a compact 25-game season in addition to exhibition games, practices 2-3 times a week, and team mandated workouts. All Gee-Gees home games are played at RCGT Stadium, which is the third largest stadium in Canada with a seating capacity of over 10,000 fans. Overall, the program’s goal is to bring competitive baseball to University and the Ottawa community as a whole.
How to become a Gee-Gee:
In addition to active recruiting in the off-season, the team holds open tryouts at the end of August for any uOttawa students to come out and display their skills for a spot on the team. In addition to open tryouts, during the fall the team hosts an annual showcase following the season.
More information about open tryouts and the showcase is provided through the team’s social media (links to which can be found below). However, if there are any other questions/inquiries please email baseball@uottawa.ca where one of the program’s executive members will be able to assist you!
