The annual tradition is back.
The University of Ottawa and Carleton University will renew hostilities at The Arena at TD Place for the fifth annual Colonel By Classic on Sunday, Jan. 22. Puck drop is at 4:00 p.m. for the men's game, followed closely by the women's teams doing battle at 7:30 p.m.
One ticket gains fans entrance into both games, and they're on sale at Ticketmaster.
Due to COVID-19, this is the first time the Classic is being held in 2019. This will also serve as the first edition held in the second half of the season – the game has taken place in November in prior years.
Carleton holds the historical edge in the game, having won three of the previous four meetings. Their last win, which came in 2019, was a 4-2 decision in front of a record attendance of 2,681 fans. The attendance of the game has increased each year it has been held.
Although Carleton holds the historical advantage, the Gee-Gees have had the Ravens number this season. The men's hockey team is 2-0 in 2022-23, with a 5-2 win coming earlier in January.
Across all sports during the 2022-23 season, Ottawa teams hold a 10-1 record against Carleton opposition.
The conference's top goal scorers will be hitting the ice. Carleton's Parker Aucoin is tied for the national lead with 17 goals in 17 games, while Mathieu Desgagnés's 13 goals are good for second in the OUA. Aucoin did not play in the Ravens two most recent games however and is goalless in his two confrontations with Ottawa.
The Colonel By Classic is part of the annual rivalry series between the Gee-Gees and the Ravens. The series includes the football Panda Game (Ottawa won 37-7), the women's hockey Alerts Cup (also taking place on Jan. 22) and the basketball Capital Hoops Classic (Friday, Feb. 3).
The game will be streamed on OUA.tv.
Before their matchup with the Ravens, Ottawa will set their sights on the Nipissing Lakers, who visit the Minto Sports Complex on Friday, Jan. 20. The Gee-Gees have beaten the Lakers twice already this season by a combined score of 12-3.
Tickets for Friday's home game are on sale at tickets.geegees.ca, while Colonel By Classic tickets can be purchased at Ticketmaster.
