The Gee-Gees men's hockey was busy over the weekend, earning a pair of wins on home ice. A 5-4 overtime thriller against Laurier and a decisive 4-1 performance over Waterloo improved Ottawa to 3-2 early in the regular season.
On Friday night, Laurier scored the lone goal in the opening period. Justin McRae evened things out early in the second, but the Golden Hawks only needed two minutes to respond. Headed into the third period with a 2-1 score in favour of Laurier, the fans in Minto Sports Complex were treated to a pile of goals in the next 20 minutes.
Once again, Laurier struck first, but Anthony Poulin and Max Grondin each found the net to even the score at 3-3. The Gee-Gees were unable to keep the Golden Hawk's power play at bay, conceding a goal in the 16th minute.
Lika Verreault scored a power play goal of his own with only 49 seconds left on the clock, enough to force the game into overtime.
McRae was the overtime hero, ending the game after seven extra minutes.
The Gee-Gees welcomed the Warriors on Saturday afternoon. Ottawa was on the offensive for much of the game, outskating Waterloo through all three periods.
Charles-Antoine Roy got the scoring started, skating the puck in and sneaking the puck past the Warriors goalie and off both the posts before landing in the net.
The rest of the goals were scored in the second period. Poulin found a perfect gap in front of the net to start things off in the 8th minute. Waterloo managed to find a goal a few minutes later, putting pressure on the Gee-Gees to maintain the lead.
In response, Mathieu Desgagnes and Adam Sandstrom scored within seconds of each other, sealing the deal at 4-1.
The Gee-Gees are on the road next weekend to take on Windsor and Western on Oct. 27 and 28. The team will be back in Ottawa on Nov. 3 when they host the Carleton Ravens.
