RECAP: Gee-Gees defeat Lions at York, set up three game home stand to close semester
The Ottawa Gee-Gees men's hockey team earned a 3-1 win over the York Lions in Toronto on Friday night. With the win, the Gee-Gees improved to 9-4-1 on the season, placing them in the mass of top teams in the OUA East, just three points behind division leaders UQTR and Queen's.
York opened the scoring cashing in on a one-on-one break near the halfway point of the first period. In the second, the Gee-Gees would even things up with Mathieu Desgagnés tapping the puck past the York netminder after a scramble in-front of the net for his sixth goal of the season.
Ottawa would take the advantage just a few minutes later when Bradley Chenier sniped home a shot high blocker side, scoring his third of the year. The goal came in Chenier's return to action for the first time since Oct. 20.
In the third period, David Lafrance found Vincent Labelle in stride down ice, quickly flipping the puck in the net for his first career regular season goal for the Garnet and Grey.
In all, it was a clean affair with only four total penalties between teams, all of which coming in the third period and only one being called on Ottawa.
In net, Franky Lapenna continued his stellar rookie campaign, stopping 16 of 17 shots to improve his goals against average to an OUA-best and nationally second-best 1.69.
Up next, the Gee-Gees will have three games in five days at home to close the semester. Up first is a battle with the OUA West's top team in the Brock Badgers next Friday. The following afternoon, they will host the Guelph Gryphons, before closing out the first semester with a Tuesday night tilt against McGill.
