The University of Ottawa Gee-Gees men's rugby team fell to McGill by a 41-7 score on Thursday evening at Matt Anthony Field.
Duncan Hladik, a second-year psychology student from Ottawa, got the lone try for the Gee-Gees.
"It's always a hard-fought match against McGill," said Hladik. "They came out firing. There was a lot of mistakes on both sides, just they were able to capitalize more than we were able to. You have to make the most of the opportunities you're given."
McGill jumped out to a quick 12-0 lead following two long runs down the left flank. Ottawa managed to earn two penalty kicks, but failed to convert either. The visitors held a 15-0 lead at the half.
Ottawa started the second half strong, moving to the McGill goal line ten minutes in. Hladik grinded his way across the goal line for his second try of the season. Nathaniel Maginnis made the convert, cutting the McGill lead to eight points.
"They were down low and hitting us hard," said Hladik. "I saw an inch and I took what I saw. They thought they held it up, but I got there just a millisecond both they did and managed to get it down."
The visitors responded a few moments later with back-to-back tries in quick succession to make the score 27-7.
McGill would tack on two more tries before full time, making the final score 41-7.
The Gee-Gees (now 2-3), sit one point behind the Bishop's Gaiters for fourth place in the RSEQ standings. The top four teams make the playoffs. Ottawa closes out their regular season at Gee-Gees Field on Sunday, October 20 at 4 p.m. against the Sherbrooke Vert et Or (1-3).
McGill improved to 3-1, taking over first place after they earned a bonus point for scoring more than four tries in the match. Their next game is against Bishop's at home on Saturday, October 19.
