RECAP : Gee-Gees back on track at York
The Gee-Gees track and field team returned to competition this weekend, sending a team of 28 competitors to the York Open which ran on Friday and Saturday in Toronto.
Sydney Smith won the 600m event with a time of 1:32.58, which is her second-best 600m time as a Gee-Gee. Smith was coming off a Gee-Gee record-setting performance in the 500m which she achieved at the Boston University John Thomas Terrier Classic on January 28. She will be targeting her 600m personal best of 1:32.17 as the season continues; for the moment her time at York ranks first in OUA and fifth nationally.
Katherine Manor's preliminary time of 7.66 in the women's 60m puts her in the national top ten, tied with two other runners for ninth; she is ranked third among OUA competitors. In the final at York, Manor ran 7.75 to place fifth.
Yasser Riad took first place in the men's 1000m and André Alie-Lamarche won the men's 1500m while Hannah Frazer claimed second in the women's 1000, however all three times are outside the national top 20.
In the field events, Jackson Colquhoun won the men's triple jump with a distance of 13.22m, and Thomas Sénéchal-Becker matched his jump of 1.95 from the season's first event to claim third. Brianna Asiamah set a new personal best of 12.48m in the shot put.
