RECAP: Strong showing for Gee-Gees Track and Field at uOttawa Winter Classic
The Gee-Gees track and field program hosted their home meet at the Dome at Louis Riel for the first time since winter 2020 on Friday and Saturday. With representation from various OUA, RSEQ, and club programs, the Gee-Gees impressed with strong performances on home turf.
Katie Manor's school record breaking effort in the 60m dash headlined several key results on the track. Manor registered a blistering time of 7.57 seconds, knocking off Christiane Lela record of 7.61 set in 2009. Manor's time places her tied for fifth in the nation.
"I'm very proud of the team and I'm really happy with my results," said Manor. "Coming back from an injury from last year, I'm very happy to see that the times are starting to drop, there's more to come."
In women's relays, the Gee-Gees were particularly dominant, winning and logging national Top 12 times in each event.
In the 4x200m, the quartet of Vienna Courteau, Katie Manor, Doyin Ogunremi, and Sia Mahajan posted a time of 1:43.32. The 4x400m team of Manor, Mahajan, Ogunremi, and Kennedy Banton-Lindsay's first place time of 3:58.21. Both times place the Gee-Gees third among OUA teams and seventh nationally.
The 4x800m group of Brooklyn McCormick, Noémie Beauregard, Kylee Fowler, and Nina-Carla Günther were victorious with a time of 9:50.58, which places them 12th nationally.
The Gee-Gees also came away victorious in the 4x400m on the men's side, with Fabrice Nonez, Lucas Zanetti, André Alie-Lamarche, and David Moulongou running a 3:23.76 to secure 11th place nationally.
Individually, Günther (4:38.38) and Beauregard (10:06.06) both secured wins in the 3000m and 1500m. On the men's side, Moulongou (1:20.06) and Zanetti (10:06.06) finished first in the 600m and 400m. Moulongou's performance places him eighth in the nation.
"It's remarkable to get back into here and see the team take advantage of our home facility. 2020 was the last time we were able to host something in here and the results this weekend just speak for themselves," said Gee-Gees head coach Richard Johnston.
"A lot of hard work put in last year without the home venue starting to surface now. Some great results this weekend."
In men's high jump, Thomas Sénéchal-Becker matched his personal best of 2.05 meters, placing first in the meet and handing him a four-way tie for the second national ranking. The Gee-Gees also fared well with wins in women's long jump (Courteau - 5.04m), men's and women's triple jump (Heather Grandy - 10.93m and Jackson Colquhoun - 13.10m), pole vault (Abby Landry - 2.45m), and women's shot put (Jessica Gyamfi - 11.28m).
