RECAP: #5 Women’s rugby back in the win column
A remarkable kicking display from Claire Gallagher, plus a pair of tries from both Tylo Borsboom and Alexandra Ondo, were more than enough for the Gee-Gees women's rugby team, who defeated the Concordia Stingers 50-0 Saturday at Matt Anthony Field.
The victory snapped uOttawa's two-game losing streak and pulled the team back to .500 on the season.
The Gee-Gees started the match gingerly, with the score being 7-0 in their favour with under ten minutes to go in the first half, thanks to a Ketsia Kamba try.
It was at that point that the offence found their footing, scoring at will through the latter stages of the first half and into the second half. Borsboom, Ondo, Anna Dodge and Meredith Sirrs all found the end zone for the Garnet and Grey.
The most impressive try of the match was the last. Gallagher fielded the ball deep in Stingers territory and angled a punt to her left towards the goal line. Ondo was in full flight and pounced on it for her second score of the day.
Gallagher converted six of the seven Gee-Gee tries while adding her second penalty of the season. The third-year Health Sciences student now leads the conference with 37 points through four matches (a try, 13 converts and two penalties). The next closest scorer has just 34 points.
Additionally, Ondo earned herself game MVP honours and leads the RSEQ Section A with five tries on the year.
Saturday marked Ottawa's final home game of the regular season. They sit in second place in RSEQ Section A with two matches remaining. The Gee-Gees close the campaign on the road against Sherbrooke (Friday, Oct. 8) and Concordia (Sunday, Oct. 17). The playoffs are slated to start Oct. 23.
