NEWS: Three Gee-Gees earn national honours
The Gee-Gees women's soccer team had three of its members recognized last night as part of the 2019 U SPORTS Women's Soccer National Championships as the national award winners and All-Canadian teams were announced at the Delta Hotels Victoria Ocean Pointe, in Victoria. Katherine Bearne, a fifth-year midfielder, is now the only Gee-Gee in women's soccer program history to be a three-time All-Canadian.
Bearne was named to the second team of All-Canadians this season after maintaining her excellent play at midfield. She is a key connection point for the Gee-Gees to transition from defence to offence, and tallied seven points this regular season (1 goal, 6 assists). In the playoffs she showed her remarkable abilities on free kicks, and her final goal of her Gee-Gees career was the game-winner in the OUA bronze medal match. Bearne is a graduate student in Physics, originally from Halifax, N.S. She was also named an All-Canadian in 2018 and 2017.
Mikayla Morton was named an All-Canadian for the first time in her career after leading the nation in goals this season. In her second season with uOttawa, Morton tallied 17 regular season goals and added another three in the postseason. Her attacking presence helped lead the Gee-Gees to a 12-0-2 undefeated regular season. Morton is a Pyschology student from Courtice, Ont.
Trinity Esprit becomes the second Gee-Gee in history named to the U SPORTS All-Rookie team, following Katerine Delev in 2017. Esprit's speed on the back line was a big advantage for Ottawa as the Gee-Gees surrendered only four goals in the regular season, and she has shown a scoring touch as well with two goals in the regular season and two in the OUA quarterfinal match. Esprit is from Scarbourough, Ont., and studies Sociology.
