The University of Ottawa men's Hockey team beat the UQTR Patriotes, 2-1, after dropping their first game of the weekend to the Concordia Stingers, 5-2. Sunday's game was a much-needed victory for a Gee-Gees team who have only two of their last six games.
The Gee-Gees started their weekend with a trip to Montreal to take on the Concordia Stingers. The Stingers would open the scoring early in the first period. The Gee-Gees would score twice in the second period thanks to a powerplay goal by Yvan Mongo and Nicolas Ouellet's third goal of the season just over a minute later. The Gee-Gees would be held scoreless for the rest of the game despite a number of quality chances.
Looking to bounce back, the Gee-Gees travelled to Trois-Rivières in search of a victory. An early powerplay opportunity would give the Garnet and Grey the lead as Mathieu Desgagnés ripped a shot into the corner for his third goal of the year. Liam Markhauser would add to the lead after finding himself on a breakaway while leaving the penalty box. His nifty handiwork gave the Gee-Gees a 2-0 lead and the goal was Markhauser's first in the Garnet and Grey.
UQTR would grab one before the end of the period but would fail to overcome the Gee-Gees two-goal lead. Anand Oberoi had a stellar game, stopping 35 of the 36 shots he faced.
"This is a big win for us. It wasn't pretty, but it was a team effort," said Gee-Gees head coach, Patrick Grandmaître. "To have success in the playoffs, you need to be able to play well against good teams on the road. I think this win will be a building block for the last stretch and the playoffs."
The Garnet and Grey will be back in action Wednesday, March 2nd, as they host the Concordia Stingers. The Gee-Gees have faced off against the Stingers twice in 2022, dropping both games. They will be looking to get back in the win column in a game of monumental playoff importance.
There are just four regular-season games remaining after this weekend's contests. The Stingers and Gee-Gees come into Wednesday's game tied on 15 points, and just one point behind the Patriotes – the Gee-Gees have two games in hand over both Concordia and UQTR.
The puck drops on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. ET.
