It was a mixed bag of results for the Gee-Gees men's hockey team in their first weekend back from the holiday break, as they beat the Carleton Ravens 5-2 and then lost to the Concordia Stingers 7-3.
Mathieu Desgagnés earned a hat trick Friday night at the Ice House, but Ottawa fell flat against the Stingers at home Sunday afternoon.
It took all of 16 seconds for Max Grondin to get the Gee-Gees first goal of the 2023 calendar year Friday evening. Desgagnés extended the Ottawa lead, but Carleton pulled one back before the end of the first frame.
The Gee-Gees turned in one of the stronger performances of the season the rest of the way however, with Desgagnés earning a hat trick by sealing the game with an empty netter. Bradley Chenier chipped in with two helpers, while Grondin had a goal and an assist.
Jean-Philippe Tourigny made 33 saves to pick up his fifth win of the season.
Friday night was Desgagnés's second hat trick of the season. He scored thrice and added an assist in a 9-2 win over RMC on Oct. 22. The second year Finance student from Montreal is tied for fourth in the national goal scoring race with 13 markers, while his 21 points lead the Gee-Gees.
Gee-Gees teams are now 10-1 against Ravens teams in all sports this season. The next time Ottawa and Carleton meet is in the Colonel By Classic on Sunday, Jan. 22 at the Arena at TD Place. Tickets for that game are on sale at Ticketmaster.
The Stingers were simply dominant against Ottawa Sunday afternoon, putting seven goals into the Ottawa net. Grondin, Charles-Antoine Roy and Nick Bowman scored for the Garnet and Grey. Their next matchup is the penultimate game of the regular season – Feb. 3 at the Ed Meagher Arena in Montreal.
Ottawa is back on the ice at the Minto Sports Complex next weekend as they face the UQTR Patriotes. Tickets for the Saturday matinee affair are on sale at tickets.geegees.ca. Puck drop is slated for 3:00 p.m.
