RECAP: #9 Gee-Gees playoff bid falters against #6 UQTR
The University of Ottawa men's hockey team saw their playoff run come to an end this Friday, falling in straight games to the OUA's top seeded UQTR Patriotes in the OUA East Quarterfinals.
Fresh off a confident sweep of Ontario Tech, the Gee-Gees faced the ultimate test against the conference giants. While Ottawa fought admirably as the underdog against a UQTR squad that dominated the regular season, the Patriotes ultimately took the series 2-0, ending the Gee-Gees' 2025-26 campaign.
Game 1: 4-1 Loss at UQTR
The series began in Trois-Rivières, where the Gee-Gees looked to steal a win in one of the toughest barns in the league. UQTR showed their strength early, building a 3-0 lead by the midway point of the second period.
Refusing to fold, the Gee-Gees pushed back. Mitch Martin gave Ottawa life in the second frame, firing home a goal, assisted by Max Grondin and Anson McMaster, to cut the deficit to 3-1. The Gee-Gees pressed to narrow the gap further, but the comeback bid was halted in the third period when UQTR was awarded a penalty shot. Charles Beaudoin converted the opportunity, making it 4-1 and sealing the Game 1 victory for UQTR.
Game 2: 5-1 Loss vs UQTR
Facing elimination on home ice, the Gee-Gees were bolstered by an electric crowd at the Minto Sports Complex. The fans provided incredible support, trying to will their team to a decisive third game.
However, the number one team in the OUA proved too difficult to topple. UQTR surged to a 3-0 lead, but the Gee-Gees refused to go quietly. William Provost brought the packed house to its feet, scoring to cut the lead to 3-1, and igniting hope for a comeback. Ottawa poured on the pressure, but they couldn't find the next gear to close the gap. UQTR added two late goals, including an empty netter to finalize the 5-1 score.
Season Wrap
While the season ends on a somber note, there is plenty to be proud of. The Gee-Gees finished with a strong 16-12 regular season record, earned home-ice advantage for the opening round, and delivered a memorable series sweep against Ontario Tech in round one.
With a battle-tested group returning, the Gee-Gees will head into the offseason with heads held high, ready to build for the 2026-27 season.
