RECAP: Gee-Gees fall to Carabins at home
On Sunday, the Gee-Gees women's volleyball team matched up against the Montréal Carabins, in the first meeting between the teams this regular season. The Carabins, who now lead the RSEQ with a 5-1 record, earned a 3-0 win at Montpetit Hall.
The first set of action saw the home team take command of the game early on. Multiple digs by Grace McKale and blocks by Janae McKay led the Gee-Gees to go up 8-6. However, the service pressure of Montréal was too much for Ottawa, allowing the Carabins to run the score up to 18-12. The Gee-Gees were able to dig themselves out of the deficit, but the visiting team proved to be too consistent with their side-out game. The Carabins took the first set 25-20.
The start of the second set was a similar story as the first; both teams were serving, passing, and scoring at a high rate. However, the service game of the Carabins struck again, allowing them to go on a 12-4 run midway through the set. Montréal would go on to take the second in dominating fashion, 25-14.
The third set of the game saw the Gee-Gees show the same level of fight they displayed in the opening set. Led by veteran outside hitter Avery Hughes, the Gee-Gees stormed out to an 11-8 lead. The play of Ottawa and support from fans began to shift the momentum in favour of the home team, causing Montréal to call multiple timeouts. The Carabins came out of the pauses looking like a different team, scoring every they wanted against the Gee-Gee defence. Ottawa would keep within reach of the Carabins but were unable to close the gap. The Carabins won the set 25-22, clinching the 3-0 match win.
Avery Hughes led the offense with 15 points, while Audrey Odigie recorded eight kills and nine digs.
The Gee-Gees next game takes place at Montpetit Hall on Friday, Nov. 18 against McGill. Tickets can be bought at tickets.geegees.ca.
