The Gee-Gees football team improved their record to 2-0 to start the 2023 season, grinding out a 15-10 win over the Varsity Blues in Toronto on Sunday night.
Powered by a 191-yard rushing performance from Amlicar Polk and five Campbell Fair field goals, the win may not have been pretty, but it counted all the same in the standings.
Save for a Toronto touchdown in the early stages of the fourth quarter, the scoring rested squarely on the shoulders of both kickers. In all, Fair was good on attempts from 40 yards twice, 31, 30, and 16 yards to seal the win. Meanwhile, Polk averaged 8.3 yards per carry on 23 attempts.
Defensively, Max Charbonneau and Emmanuel Aboagye-Gyan led the way for Ottawa, registering 6.5 and 4.5 tackles respectively, both with sacks. Gee-Gees quarterback Ryan Licandro finished 15-25 with 109 yards, while Noah Avery and Nicholas Gendron had 45 yards receiving each.
What They're Saying:
"I just want to be the most reliable kicker that I can be, if the team needs me to kick five field goals, I'll do everything I can do to make them all… The bye week will be good for everyone to recovery from injuries and have some extra time to prepare." – Campbell Fair, kicker.
"I think we did some things well tonight. Overall, we have to do a better job at applying what we work on all week more consistently. It was a tough road win, so I'm pleased that we stuck with it and finished it off." – Marcel Bellefeuille, head coach.
Next Up:
The Gee-Gees are on a bye week next weekend, they will have extra time to prepare for a playoff rematch with the currently 2-0 Windsor Lancers at TD Place on Sept. 16.
