Tokyo Bound: Caleb Agada to represent Nigeria
Gee-Gees basketball alumnus Caleb Agada will be an Olympian. He has been named to Nigeria's Olympic team for the 2020 Tokyo Games, with the tournament getting underway July 25.
It was announced last week that Agada was a member of the 16-man roster, and he was named to the final 12-man roster this week. Agada began representing Nigeria in 2019, helping them qualify for the 2019 FIBA World Cup. He averaged 14.8 minutes and 10.3 points in three games.
Agada has also been in the news recently as he participated in workouts with the NBA's Utah Jazz and is slated to join the Denver Nuggets for Summer League play.There were 19 players of Nigerian decent on NBA teams in 2020-21.
Agada had a decorated Gee-Gees career from 2012-17, including twice being named the U SPORTS Defenisve Player of the Year. He previously represented Canada at the 2015 FISU Summer Universiade.
At the Olympics, Nigeria is in Group B with Australia, Germany, and Italy. This is Nigeria's third Olympic appearance in men's basketball, following 2012 and 2016. Ranked 22nd in the world, Nigeria qualified for the Olympics at the 2019 FIBA World Cup by finishing as the top team from FIBA's Africa region.
