Ahead of their "Ice Out Hate" game on Tuesday, Feb. 22, the University of Ottawa Gee-Gees men's hockey team is encouraging all hockey players, coaches and fans to take the "Get Uncomfortable Pledge."
Created by the Black Girl Hockey Club, the pledge aims to disrupt racism on and off the ice, and make hockey welcoming for everyone. The "Get Uncomfortable Pledge" and more information on the campaign can be found HERE.
"I appreciate that my whole team is taking it," said Gee-Gees captain Yvan Mongo. "For me, being the only black guy on the team, it's a sign of support from them. I already knew that they had my back, but the fact that they took the time, and are trying to learn and get better, is really dear to my heart."
"It's a great thing to educate yourself on and be aware of the problems that exist in sport," said Gee-Gees defenceman Keenan MacIsaac. "I think for everyone, regardless of their race or ethnicity, it's important to have those uncomfortable conversations."
The men's hockey program is hosting an "Ice Out Hate" game on Feb. 22 against Concordia. Players on the team will be using "Tape Out Hate" tape from the Hockey Diversity Alliance. The Black Student Athlete Advocacy Council of the University of Ottawa will be present on the concourse during the game and taking part in a ceremonial puck drop.
Tickets for the Ice Out Hate game must be purchased in advance at tickets.geegees.ca.
"There's a lack of inclusiveness in hockey, and we've known about this for a while," said Mongo. "Recently there have been racist incidents, and it's a reminder that there's still a lot of work to do.
"This is an endeavor that can bring about change in hockey. Change that is needed."
