RECAP: Men’s rugby makes statement, rolls undefeated Gaiters
If they weren't already, the other teams in the RSEQ are now on notice.
The Gee-Gees men's rugby team beat the Bishop's Gaiters 44-11 Friday evening. The win came at Coulter Field in Lennoxville, Que., the same pitch on which the Gaiters snapped 27-game winning streak of the powerhouse Concordia Stingers less than a week prior.
Yenam Zouzoua scored a pair of tries to help Ottawa to the victory, while Jamie Armstrong continued his strong kicking season, accounting for 14 points (four converts and two penalties).
The Gee-Gees started the match strong by scoring inside the first three minutes. Duncan Hladik got his team-leading fifth try of the season from close range.
The Gaiters then accounted for 11 unanswered points, before Ottawa took over. The score was 20-11 at the half following tries from Mateo Crapigna and Zouzoua, and an Armstrong penalty.
Much like the first half, the Gee-Gees started the second 40 with a bang. Veterans James Flemming, Theo Espagnol and Wahid Hamidi combined, with the latter trotting into the end zone.
The scoring was capped off with Zouzoua earning his second try, Espangol finding pay dirt and Armstrong booting a penalty.
The win improves the Gee-Gees to 3-1 on the year, equally the most wins in a single RSEQ campaign for the program. The team also earned a bonus point by scoring more than three tries, giving them 15 total points on the season.
The Gee-Gees hit the road next week to face another strong team, the McGill Redbirds (2-0). They'll cap off their regular season at home on Oct. 16 against ETS.
