RECAP: Men’s rugby falls to Redbirds, Armstrong sets record
The University of Ottawa men's rugby team gave the McGill Redbirds all they could handle Saturday afternoon, but ultimately fell 31-25 at Percival Molson Memorial Stadium in Montreal.
Owen Cumming did the damage for McGill, scoring three tries.
Despite the loss, uOttawa earned a bonus point for losing by seven points or less. The Gee-Gees sit in second place in the RSEQ, four points behind Concordia and one point ahead of McGill. However, the Redbirds have a game in hand.
The Gee-Gees found the endzone three times in the match, with Wahid Hamidi, Duncan Hladik and Sam Mace scoring. Hladik's try gives him six on the season, the most in the conference.
Jamie Armstrong converted two of the tries and booted two penalties. With his 10 points on the afternoon, the second-year moved into first place on the program's all-time scoring list in the RSEQ era.
An economics major, Armstrong now has 62 career points in Garnet and Grey, coming via four tries, 15 converts and four penalties. The Ottawa product surpasses Nat Maginnis, who suited up for Ottawa during the 2019 season and accounted for 55 points.
Armstrong's 52 points during the current regular season campaign is also a record. Maginnis had 48 during the 2019 regular season.
The Gee-Gees close out the regular season at home against ETS (2-2) on Saturday, October 16 at Matt Anthony Field. Kickoff is slated for 3:00 p.m. Ottawa can secure a playoff spot with a victory.
