RECAP: Men’s rugby defeats McGill for the first time since joining the RSEQ
The Gee-Gees improved to 2-0 after a thrilling performance against the McGill Redbirds on Sunday evening. It was a big night for Ottawa as they defeated McGill in a highly anticipated rematch of the 2022 RSEQ final.
"We've never beaten McGill, so the boys are pretty pumped and of course we missed out on nationals losing to them so it's a really big win," said Gee-Gees head coach, Andrew Armstrong.
It took some time, but Ottawa was the first to put points on the board when Gordie Evans powered into the corner of endzone for a try 30 minutes into the opening half. Glenn Roy followed with the clean convert, his first of three.
McGill didn't end the half empty handed, scoring a penalty kick to end the half.
Coming out of halftime ahead 7-3, the Gee-Gees continued their strong play against the Redbirds, refusing to give up their lead.
Plenty of Gee-Gees had the opportunity to contribute throughout the game, and Evan Roy, Lewis Shiels, and Sean Biryukov each scored tries in the second half.
"It's huge for us knowing that we can empty the tank and still know that we have such good players coming on to finish the job, it's great," said Glenn Roy.
While the win is something to celebrate, the Gee-Gees still have tough games on their schedule, including their next game at Concordia on Sep. 30th.
"We go to Concordia next week who [have been] five-time defending champions. There are at least five really quality programs in the RSEQ, every week someone is coming to take you down," said Armstrong.
