The Gee-Gees swim team showed its depth on Sunday
The Gee-Gees swim team showed its depth on Sunday at the second University Cup meet of the season, with a dozen team members swimming to top three finishes, including three relay events. Davide Casarin and Delphine Vandal led the way in point scoring as the team placed third overall, with the women's team moving up to second in the team rankings, seven points ahead of McGill.
The Gee-Gees women had four individual top four finishers, including first-years Abby Simms and Talea Claassens. Delphine Vandal took a second place finish in the 800m freestyle and added two third place finishes including one in the very quick 200m freestyle event which produced the top three women's point scores of the day.
Simms also had three top-three placings, coming second in the 50m free and helping the 400m medley and freestyle relay teams to second and third place finishes, respectively. Lauren Shearer had a third place in the 100m breaststroke, was fourth in the 50m breaststroke, and also swam in the medley relay. Claassens, also on the medley relay, was fourth individually in the 200m backstroke.
Davide Casarin showed his range once again by winning the 200 and the 1500m free. Casarin also placed second in the 200m backstroke. Second-year William Barrett won the 100m breaststroke by half a second. First-year Allen Zheng had a fourth place finish in the 50m free, and was also on the freestyle relay team which earned a second place finish.
