RECAP: Smith, Sénéchal-Becker finish fourth as track closes U SPORTS season
A pair of Gee-Gees track athletes just missed the podium at the 2022 U SPORTS Track & Field Championships, hosted by the University of New Brunswick at the Irving Oil Field House in Saint John, N.B.
Sydney Smith finished fourth in the 600m, while high jumper Thomas Sénéchal-Becker put up an identical result.
In her final meet as a member of the Gee-Gees, Smith missed out on a medal by four one-thousandths of a second in an extremely competitive race. The top five finishers hit the tape within eight-tenths of a second of one another, with Guelph's Sadie-Jane Hickson taking gold.
Smith and Hickson went head-to-head at the OUA Championships the week prior, with Smith passing Hickson in the final 50m.
Sénéchal-Becker's tremendous rookie season in Garnet and Grey concluded with him being one of four athletes at the meet to break 2.00m in the high jump. Just 18 years old, the Health Science student's leap of 2.05m earlier in the season still ranks third in the country this year.
Shot putter Brianna Asiamah finished eighth thanks to a put of 12.31m, while the women's 4x400m relay team of Smith, Doyin Ogunremi, Frédérique Bell and Hannah Frazier crossed the line in seventh. Smith ran a blistering final leg in 56.261, a remarkable time considering she ran the 600m less than three hours prior.
The women's and men's team titles were won by the University of Guelph.
