RECAP: Asiamah shines for track in Vert et Or Invitational
The Gee-Gees track team opened their 2023 calendar year at the Université de Sherbrooke Saturday for the Vert et Or Invitational.
Brianna Asiamah and Nina-Carla Günther won their respective events, as six Gee-Gees found the podium.
Asiamah's showing was particularly impressive. The third year Social Work major won the weight throw with a toss of 12.53m. The throw is the Kingston, Ont., product's personal best and won the competition by 22 cm. Asiamah finished seventh at the 2022 OUA Championship and is currently ranked ninth among all Canadian university athletes this season.
Günther, a transfer from the Université de Montréal originally from Aix-en-Provence, France, won the 1000m by just under two seconds. Her time adjusted time 2:55.48 is ninth among OUA competitors this season.
The Gee-Gees women's 4x400 meter 'A' relay team came in a strong second. Sia Mahajan, Katie Manor, Courtney Cenac and Doyin Ogunremi finished with an adjusted time of 4:06.19, good for tenth in the country on the year. The 'B' relay team finished fifth.
The women's triple jump saw two University of Ottawa athletes make the podium, with Heather Grandy finishing second and Elizabeth Moreland coming in third. Grandy also competed in the weight throw and long jump at the meet.
On the men's side, Jackson Colquhoun came in second in the triple jump, while Fabrice Nonez took third in the 60m hurdles.
The high jump competition was not held Saturday, meaning Thomas Sénéchal-Becker was unable to compete in his strongest event. The second year Gee-Gee took home bronze at the 2022 OUA Championship and won his first meet of the season in late 2022.
