RECAP: Women’s rugby blanks UPEI, onto gold medal rematch with Queen’s
Five Gee-Gees scored tries in a 36-0 shutout victory over the UPEI Panthers on November 2 in their quarterfinal game at the 2022 U SPORTS Women's Rugby Championship on Wednesday.
Ottawa's tries were scored by Ngozi Mosindi (3rd minute), Rachel Steel (7th minute) Ketsia Kamba (28th and 32nd minutes), Claire Gallagher (41st minute) and Jamie-Lee Walker (59th minute) while recording their third shutout of the season as a team.
"We didn't start the way we wanted to and the game didn't go exactly as planned, but we talked about letting the play develop a little more and then we'd find our opportunity to move forward" said Gallagher, who scored one try and converted three in the match.
"I think the ball is a bit more slick in this kind of weather," said Gee-Gees head coach Jen Boyd when asked about the damp field conditions on the natural grass pitch at Victoria's Centennial Stadium. "This is where the game should be played though, it's much more pure. I love the grass."
With the win, Ottawa advances to play Queen's on Friday, November 4, in the semifinals. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. local time (10:00 p.m. in Ottawa) in a rematch of the 2021 gold medal game.
