RECAP: Gee-Gees earn seventh RSEQ title in riveting rematch with the Rouge et Or
For the sixth consecutive season, the Gee-Gees women's rugby team battled it out with the Laval Rouge et Or for the RSEQ Championship.
For the past two seasons, the Rouge et Or have come out on top in the RSEQ final, going on the win the U SPORTS National Championship title in 2022.
Under the wind and rain, the Gee-Gees avenged their 14-12 loss to Laval in the regular season with a 27-12 victory, earning the conference title for the seventh time in program history.
The Gee-Gees were the dominant team throughout the game, taking on the undefeated Rouge et Or with the upmost speed and physicality. Ottawa never giving up the lead and refusing to let Laval score in the opening half.
The first try came at the 20-minute mark when Ottawa powered through Laval's defences and touched down in the try zone. Aurora Bowie's convert was good, and that marked the beginning of three consecutive tries for the Gee-Gees.
Emma Wade and Ketsia Kamba were the next to earn scores, extending the Gee-Gees lead to 24-0.
15 minutes into the second half, Laval started to look like the unstoppable team they were all season, earning their first set of points. Ottawa responded quickly, maintaining a 27-5 lead over their conference rivals.
Laval punched another one in, but it wouldn't be enough to catch up to Ottawa.
Wade and Kamba each punched in a pair of tries, while Deborah Oyetoran contributed one of her own.
The Gee-Gees dethroned the Rouge et Or and take the 2023 RSEQ Championship.
Conference all-stars and major award winners were announced following the game. Eight Gee-Gees were recognized.
Ketsia Kamba led the Gee-Gees with nine tries throughout the regular season, earning First Team All-Star honours. Ngozi Mosindi and Tylo Borsboom followed with six tries each and Emma Wade earned her third All-Star acknowledgement, rounding out the Gee-Gees representation on the First Team.
Deborah Oyetoran, Sarah White, Leigha Stiles and Rachel Steel all earned Second Team All-Star honours.
Ottawa will be back in Quebec City for the U SPORTS Women's Rugby National Championship, which takes place Nov. 1 to Nov. 5.
