RECAP: Women’s rugby redeems themselves with 41-0 win over St. FX
After suffering a heartbreaking loss in the opening match of the 2023 U SPORTS Women's Rugby National Championship tournament, the Gee-Gees recovered with a convincing win over the St. Francis Xavier X-Women on Friday afternoon.
In only two minutes, Ketsia Kamba broke through for the first try of the day. Kamba entered the tryzone moments later, and with the help of a successful convert off the boot of Aurora Bowie, the Gee-Gees had a 12-0 lead with plenty of rugby left to play.
Tylo Borsboom was next to breakout for the Gee-Gees, starting with a huge push for a try. Borsboom followed it up with a huge gain in the midfield to open the door for one last try before the half ended. It was Annalise Wey finished off the drive to give Ottawa a 22-0 lead at halftime.
Bowie got things started with a successful penalty kick in the opening minutes of the second half.
The scoring quieted down until the 50th minute when Borsboom decided to add another try for the Gee-Gees. The final 10 minutes consisted of a try by Sophie McDonald, and a pair of penalty kicks by Taelor Hendrick.
"Today we showed what it means to play Gee-Gees rugby," said Borsboom, who earned Nike Player of the Game honours. "We played brave and as a family and it showed in the results. It's an honour to take the field with this team every single time and I'm beyond grateful that we ensured another opportunity to do so again."
The 41-0 win advances the Gee-Gees to the consolation final where they will meet the UBC Thunderbirds to battle for fifth place on Sunday at 11 a.m.
