RECAP: Women’s soccer season comes to an end in semis versus Queen’s
The Gee-Gees and Gaels women's soccer teams played a tight match at Matt Anthony Field on Saturday afternoon, but it was the visitors who took advantage of their opportunities and came away 2-0 victors.
Queen's clinches a spot in the OUA Championship Game and at the 2021 U SPORTS National Championship.
"Credit to Queen's, they scored when they had their chances," said Gee-Gees head coach Steve Johnson. "We had a lot of opportunities, and some of our corners were really close. They defended well and cleared balls off the line. We also had chances during the run of play, and I don't think we were as good around the net as we usually are."
Jamie Foot scored the opening goal for the Gaels early in the season half. The veteran leader of Queen's was at it again later in the second 45, setting up Cecilia Wey to make it a 2-0 lead.
Ottawa had their chances throughout the match, racking up 10 corner kicks and 15 shot attempts. The Gee-Gees drew a penalty late on a Queen's handball, but Emma Lefebvre's shot was stopped by Kirsten Tynan.
The Gee-Gees disappointing season comes to an end, as does the career of Lefebvre, who finishes second on the program's all-time goals list.
"I'm proud of our team, despite the result," said Lefebvre. "Even going down two goals, we never gave up. We still created a lot of opportunities, unfortunately we were unable to convert as well as Queen's did. Overall, it was a great five seasons and I have many great memories to look back on."
Ottawa will shift their focus to the RSEQ Indoor Winter season, which gets going in January.
