NEWS : Ferland named to U SPORTS All-Rookie Team, Provost a repeat All-Canadian
The Gee-Gees women's soccer team had two members recognized at the All-Canadian Banquet held in Kingston, Ont., the evening before the U SPORTS National Championship quarterfinal matches were scheduled to kickoff from Richardson Stadium.
Cassandra Provost was named to the First Team of All-Canadians for the second straight year, following her selection as the OUA East Most Valuable Player. Provost ranked second in U SPORTS this season with 23 goals scored, establishing a new Gee-Gees record.
Joining Provost on the stage was first year defender Gabrielle Ferland who was named to the U SPORTS All-Rookie Team. Ferland started all but one game for uOttawa in her debut season, contributing to the Gee-Gees excellent team defensive record.
The Garnet and Grey allowed just four goals over the course of the 12 game regular season (0.35 goals per game against), ranking third as a team across U SPORTS and second in the OUA conference.
Ferland in particular displayed steadiness at centre back.
"Gaby exceeded expectations for me, she earned every minute that she got," says Gee-Gees head coach Steve Johnson. "She is a good student of the game and was one of the unsung heroes on a back line that was one of the best defensive performances in our team history. I think she's just going to continue to get better."
Ferland's lone point of the regular season was a big one; she scored the game-winning goal in Ottawa's second match, a 3-2 victory at Toronto. From the middle of the box she timed her header perfectly to deposit a corner kick delivery into the far corner of the goal.
Ferland attended E.S.C. Garneau and last played club soccer with the Ottawa Gloucester Hornets. She is studying International Development and Globalization at uOttawa.
