The Gee-Gees women's volleyball team closed off an optimistic 2022-23 season on the road with a 3-0 loss to the UQTR Patriotes on Saturday.

As the season closes, Ottawa posted their best record (5-13) since 2016-17, with five wins being their most since winning nine in their first season competing in the RSEQ.

The Gee-Gees battled valiantly in hopes of earning a final win for the season, but the host Patriotes narrowly edged them out to secure their fourth win of the season.

After falling 25-18 in the first frame, the Gee-Gees responded with a thrilling second set that came down to the wire and fell in favour of UQTR by a 25-20 final tally. In the final frame, Ottawa pulled the score to a manageable 20-16 deficit, before the Patriotes closed off the win emphatically with five of the next six points for a 25-17 win.

STATS AT A GLANCE:

First-year outside hitter Audrey Odigie capped off an impressive rookie campaign with eight kills and an ace to go along with nine digs and a solo block. Avery Hughes added seven kills on the afternoon.

WHAT THEY'RE SAYING:

"12 of the 22 sets we lost this year were by three or fewer points; that is a team that has closed the competitive gap. We are also a team that beat three Top 10 ranked teams this season, including three of the four teams that have made the playoffs.

The bottom line is that we must get better between now and next fall to turn the 'close ones' into wins and find our way into the playoffs for 2023-24. With 12 returning players and two solid additions, so far, there is every reason to believe we will achieve that goal." – Lionel Woods, Head Coach.
