RECAP: Ottawa University Downs Bishops to Win Crown
Lennoxville, Que. (CP) - University of Ottawa won the Ottawa-St. Lawrence Conference football championship Saturday, scoring three of the five touchdowns that cropped up in the exciting last quarter to defeat Bishop's University 19-13.
The teams went into the game undefeated, Ottawa having won the Western division of the conference and Bishop's the Eastern, each with a 4-0 record.
Quarterback Jim Chiarelli handled the Ottawa team well, and with play on the Ottawa five-yard line, Nils Bodker grabbed a hook pass to score for Bishop's.
The touchdown parade was slow getting started. There was no scoring in the opening quarter and Ottawa moved in front 6-0 in the second when Chiarelli scored on a keeper play around right end.
Guy Payne kicked a single for Bishop's in the third quarter. Bishop's took a temporary lead in the final quarter on Gord Ewart's 12-yard end run for a touchdown, but Ottawa came back with two successive touchdowns. Vince Thompson on a six-yard run and Bob Law gathered in Chiarelli's screen pass to score from 30 yards out. Bodker's touchdown came nearly six minutes later.
