Bio

Mike Murphy had an incredible playing career at fullback and running back with the Gee-Gees from 1974-1976, which included being a part of the 1975 Vanier Cup champion team and the 1976 Yates Cup champions. He made one of the biggest plays in Gee-Gees history, recovering a fumble in the Calgary endzone to record the national-championship winning touchdown in 1975.

In 1976 Murphy was named the OQIFC Conference Most Valuable Player and an All-Canadian. He set a Gee-Gees record with 1060 yards rushing, a single-season record which still stands (as of 2021). That season he totalled 144 points scored, which still ranks second all-time in Gee-Gees history for a single season and third in U SPORTS history. He set the OUA record for points scored in a game with 42 against McGill; Murphy scored five touchdowns in the game, one of just three such performances in Gee-Gees history. In total, he scored 15 touchdowns in 1976 which ranks second in Gee-Gees history.

The Ottawa Rough Riders picked him up in the 1977 CFL draft, where he went on to rush for 871 yards and catch 48 passes for an added 483 yards in his first year. These outstanding numbers won him the Frank. M Gibson Trophy for top rookie in the CFL East. During his four seasons with the Rough Riders Murphy rushed for a total of 1983 yards, caught 163 passes for 1634 yards, and scored ten touchdowns.

Murphy is from Ottawa and attended Hillcrest and St. Patrick's High Schools prior to joining the Gee-Gees.
