Despite some encouraging performances, the Gee-Gees women's volleyball team dropped both matches over the weekend.
NOVEMBER 12 at MONTREAL
Ottawa struggled against the Montreal Carabins, falling 25-16, 25-13, 25-15 to the six-time defending champions.
The hosts were flying in every sense of the word, and some strong service from Les Bleues made life difficult for the Gee-Gees. Montreal combined for nine services aces (three from Oceane Couturier), while Ottawa had three with seven service errors.
The Carabins power from the service line had the Gee-Gees on their heels throughout the match, but the Garnet and Grey kept battling through the end of the third set.
Tristan Peterson led the way with seven kills on 28 total attacks, while Maxim Langevin did the majority of the setting, earning 10 assists.
NOVEMBER 14 vs SHERBROOKE
The Gee-Gees returned home to Montpetit Hall for the first time since their season opener in late October. The Vert & Or proved to be a tough test for Ottawa, winning 25-20, 19-25, 25-14, 25-12.
Ottawa turned in a much-improved performance compared to Friday evening, as the team put up a .440 kill percentage in the second set.
The Gee-Gees could well have found themselves up two sets to none, as the opening set was tied at 20-20. The Vert & Or pulled away however, thanks in part to two aces. The final two sets were all Sherbrooke.
Middle Alana Leung had an outstanding game offensively, earning eight kills on 13 total attacks. Peterson paced Ottawa offensively again with 10 kills, and the Gee-Gees also showed discipline from the service line, committing just two service errors in the match.
WHAT THEY'RE SAYING
"Progress was visible against Sherbrooke for sure. Set one was in our grasp and set two showed who we can be. Some runs of great 'team volleyball' and a high level of execution came together in the first two sets. The final two sets saw some old demons show their face – team serve receive and positive digging touches are the important aspects of our game that need to improve." – Head Coach Lionel Woods
