With their first win under their belt, the Gee-Gees Men's hockey team is back in action this weekend. They are on the road to faceoff against the UQTR Patriotes at 7 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 12 before travelling home to take on the Concordia Stingers, Sunday, Nov. 14 at 7 p.m.
The Garnet and Grey got their season started with a tough 3-2 overtime loss against the Carleton Ravens before getting their first win of the season on Saturday night when they beat McGill 5-3, taking three of a possible four points. A multi-point weekend from Branden Makara, Max Grondin, and Bradley Chenier were crucial to this early success. Gee-Gees starting goaltender Tristan Bérubé had a good weekend, stopping 67 of the 73 shots he faced.
UQTR split their opening weekend of games with a 3-0 shutout loss to Concordia and a 6-5 offensive outburst against Carleton. Despite having 38 shots on target against Concordia, the Patriotes were unable to beat Stinger goaltender Thomas Sigouin. They bounced back on Sunday with a six-goal performance over the Carleton Ravens. In a game where the lead changed three times, the Patriotes were led by Julien Tessier and Maxime Chagnon who both had multi-goal games. Tessier scored twice on the powerplay including the overtime winner.
The last time the University of Ottawa and UQTR met was in the 2019-20 season's OUA Playoff. The Garnet and Grey beat the Patriotes over three games en route to the OUA Gold medal game.
Concordia and the Gee-Gees also met in the 2019-20 OUA playoffs. The Garnet and Grey swept the Stingers by a combined score of 10-4 in the OUA semi-finals.
The Stingers started this season with a 3-2 shootout loss to the McGill Redbirds. In a penalty-filled game, Concordia took an early lead but needed a late goal by Marcus Tesink to force overtime after two unanswered goals by McGill. Neither team could break through in the overtime period with the Redbird edging it in the shootout. The Stingers bounced back Friday night shutting out UQTR. Goals by Maxim Trépanier, Tyller Hylland, and Chase Harwell rounded off a dominant team performance.
