RECAP: Ottawa rises to second at RSEQ Cup
The Gee-Gees made an upward move at the second RSEQ Cup event this weekend, rising in the overall standings from third to second on the strength on an improved men's team performance. uOttawa placed second in both the men's and women's standings at Sherbrooke this week with the men overtaking Laval to move up from their third place finish at Montreal to open the circuit.
Will Barrett was a key part of the Gee-Gees surge, contributing a first place finish in the 100m breaststroke and a second place finish in the 50m breaststroke as well as helping to lift the 4x100m medley relay team to a new team record and a second place finish. The new record time of 3:42.01 set by Brendan Vanherk, Alexandre Perreault, Barrett, and Allen Zheng, broke the short course team record which had stood since 2017.
Zheng and Perreault also teamed up on the 4x100 freestyle relay, taking a third place finish along with Louis Bertrand and Nathan Schiffmann. Perreault took second place individually in the 100m butterfly, making him uOttawa's second top point-getter of the meet after Barrett. Louis Bertrand also laid down a massive swim in the 200m freestyle, posting an excellent time of 1:50.57 to place fourth in a strong field.
On the women's side, uOttawa stayed steady from RSEQ Cup 1 and held onto second position in the team standings. Adele Yamashita-Ball had another outstanding meet, with her time of 8:52.40 winning her the 800m freestyle event by over 13 seconds. Yamashita-Ball also placed second in the 200m free.
Abigail McKinley and Lauren Shearer were the other double-medallists for the Gee-Gees women with McKinley taking second place in the 100m butterfly and third in the 400m IM while Shearer earned second and third in the 50m and 100m breaststroke events, respectively. Unfortunately the duo was also part of a disqualification in the 4x100m medley relay, but the Gee-Gees maintained a twenty point edge overall on the Montreal Carabins for the meet.
The next RSEQ Cup event is set for November 7, at Laval.
