Preview: Gee-Gees and Ravens to battle for revived Alerts Cup in Colonel By Classic debut
During the 2004-05 season, the Alerts Cup was a new annual competition between the uOttawa Gee-Gees and Carleton Ravens women's hockey teams. Now, with the creation of the women's hockey Colonel By Classic game, the teams will vie to capture the newly restored Alerts Cup.
The Ottawa Alerts were one of the first-ever competitive women's hockey club representing the City of Ottawa across Eastern Ontario from 1915 to 1930. The Alerts were mainly an exhibition team that traveled to play in Montreal, Renfrew, Cornwall, Toronto and Pittsburgh, before entering the Eastern Ladies Hockey League in Quebec. The Ottawa Alerts became the first-ever World Champions in 1917, beating the Pittsburgh Polar Maids.
Eva Ault who played for the Ottawa Alerts, was considered to be one of the best female hockey players in Canada during the 1920s. Ault helped commercialize women's hockey during the first World War as local men's hockey leagues were depleted due to deployment. By 1920, organized women's hockey was played across the country thanks to the efforts of these pioneering women.
