RECAP: #4 Ottawa earns key home win over Nipissing
The fourth-ranked Gee-Gees women's soccer team returned to the win column with a key 1-0 win over the Nipissing Lakers at Matt Anthony Field on Sunday.
Ottawa was quick on the attack in the early stages of the match. Forward Olivia Allen, earning her first career start, set the tone putting two shots on net in the first two minutes.
In the 11th minute, Soumaya Bouak snuck a pass behind a Lakers defender and found Cassandra Provost who shot and scored her sixth goal of the season.
"Overall, I think we did really well," said Provost. "It's always nice to score right at the beginning of the game, we got to set the rhythm of the game and hold the lead."
The Gee-Gees' pressure was relentless through much of the match, in total putting 11 shots on net. Despite several quality chances, the Gee-Gees were unable to capitalize and find a second goal of the afternoon.
Defensively, Ottawa's backline was strong all game, limiting the Lakers two only two shots on net. Keepers Juliann Lacasse and Cassidy Joslin split time in net once again, earning a combined clean sheet.
"I'm really pleased with the clean sheet," said Gee-Gees coach Steve Johnson. "Nipissing is fast and they've got some really good front players, but our backline was phenomenal today. That's probably the result I'm most happy with."
The Gee-Gees started the season with the toughest portion of their schedule, facing three top teams in the conference including Toronto in back-to-back weekends. For the remainder of the OUA season, Carleton is the only team the Gee-Gees will face with a winning record.
Up next, Ottawa will take to the road to play the Ontario Tech Ridgebacks as well as the Trent Excalibur on Saturday and Sunday. Both games will be streaming live on OUA.tv.
The Gee-Gees will return home to take on the Carleton Ravens on Sept. 29 at 7 p.m. Tickets are available online at tickets.geegees.ca.
