Facing an opponent that they had already beaten twice in the preseason, the Gee-Gees volleyball team came out confident and ready to play on Oct. 28. Playing yet another road game, this time against the McMaster Marauders, the Gee-Gees won in straight sets for the third time in four matches. Ottawa, currently ranked sixth in the country, improved their record to 4-0, while the Marauders fell to 0-3.
"We have finished the first portion of league play in good shape. Now we get to come home for five of the remaining six games of the first half and do our best to build on what has been a great start to the year," said Gee-Gees head coach Lionel Woods. "But that is all it is: a good start. This is a long season, there are a number of teams who can win this thing and we still have lots to improve on. I am just glad we get to do it in the comfort of our own gym for a while."
The Gee-Gees led 16-12 at the technical timeout of the first set, thanks to strong serving. Ottawa dominated their opponents on serves, earning 20 aces to McMaster's seven. Third-year outside hitter Kelsie English and rookie Veronique Caya both racked up five aces on the match, while four other Gee-Gees contributed with at least two aces each. The Gee-Gees won the first set 25-19.
In the second set, the Gee-Gees proved why they are the highest ranked OUA team in the CIS top 10, by crushing the Marauders 25-13. Ottawa had a balanced attack against the Marauders, led by third-year outside attackers Karina Krueger Schwanke and Myriam English who had 10 and seven kills respectively.
A desperate Marauders team fought back hard in the third set to take a 16-12 advantage into the technical timeout. However, the Gee-Gees showed their class by scoring 13 of the final 20 points of the game to take the final set 25-23. The Gee-Gees are currently tied for first place in the OUA with the York Lions, who are also 4-0. Both teams have won 12 sets while losing just one, so far this season.
Ottawa will finally host its home opener on November 3rd when they will face the Guelph Gryphons at Montpetit Hall. The Gee-Gees eliminated the Gryphons from the playoffs last season with a 3-1 victory in the OUA quarterfinals.
