The Brampton, ON native joins the Gee-Gees after playing top-level volleyball with the Defensa Volleyball Club.
The Gee-Gees women's volleyball team is proud to announce Trinity Lusan, their newest recruit for the 2019-20 season. Lusan will join Michaela Jones and Portia Cooper, as the team's additions for the 2019-20 season.
The Brampton, ON native joins the Gee-Gees after playing top-level volleyball with the Defensa Volleyball Club in 2018-19. Lusan began her pathway in the sport playing recreationally at 11-years-old, as she advanced, she entered into the rep volleyball system in Brampton, where she played until she was 17. A key step up came when she was asked to join the highly-regarded Defensa Volleyball Club in Burlington, where she has played for the last year.
As a skilled 5'-11" outside hitter, she initially looked to the United States to pursue her collegiate volleyball career, however was intrigued by the opportunity to stay and play in Canada.
"Ottawa was the first Canadian school to get in touch with me, which really stuck out," she said. "From there I organized my official visit."
On her visit, everything fell into place, the environment surrounding the team and the university drew her in and she decided to commit to the Gee-Gees.
"The main thing I loved was the family culture and that dynamic on the team, and in the school itself. I really wanted that type of feeling, I felt like I was at home, even though I had been there for a few hours."
The feeling of everything lining up was mutual between Lusan and her new coaching staff, which had everyone feeling that it was a perfect fit.
"What struck us as most during her official visit was how quickly she seemed to fit in with our current team culture, academic mindset, and her drive to help our program get back to the top four in Canada as soon as possible," said Gee-Gees head coach Lionel Woods.
The Gee-Gees are building a talented young core to compete among the nation's best teams in the RSEQ. The addition of Lusan, along with the team's two other 2019 recruits, provides an exciting burst of high-end talent that has time to grow with each other.
"Being able to grow with the with the team, with the girls there is important," said Lusan. "The potential of the team in the next few years is very exciting to me."
Coach Woods echoed Lusan's sentiment, citing her maturity, passion, and volleyball background as reasons to be confident in his team's latest recruit.
"Trinity has all the tools to impact our RSEQ performance early in her career," he said. "She has been playing with the Defensa Volleyball Club this past year, a club that trains and plays with a similar philosophy and style; and one that we have a ton of confidence in when it comes to the preparation of players for the next level."
Off the court, academics are key for Lusan as she is preparing to pursue a Bachelor of Human Kinetics with eyes on graduate studies in Physiotherapy down the road.
A promising addition to next season's roster, the team is excited to have Lusan in place as they build a young and competitive team at Montpetit Hall.
