An open letter from Sue Hylland
Dear Gee-Gees family,
After 42 years of working in sport, I'll be retiring on June 30th. While my official time at the University of Ottawa began in 2016, my connection to the Gee-Gees sports family started much earlier – as a fan in the 90s with my husband as the Head Football Coach and a parent cheering on my daughter, who was a member of the women's basketball team from 2011-2016. Having the opportunity to end my career here has been an absolute privilege and a true gift.
I'm deeply grateful to those who entrusted me with this role and to everyone across campus. The dedicated staff, full-time and part-time, coaches, volunteers, alumni and especially our phenomenal students and student-athletes – you've all made my time at uOttawa unforgettable. Recreation and Varsity Sports (RVS) has evolved, but our core goal remains – to be a valued and respected part of uOttawa's success. We are all Gee-Gees, united through our passion for sport and recreation to create a sense of belonging for members of our school.
My deepest appreciation goes to the entire RVS Gee-Gees sports family. You've poured your hearts and soul into creating a phenomenal experience for our students, whether for varsity sports or recreation. The laughter, dedication, and shared moments – these are what make our jobs truly special.
To our remarkable student-athletes, thank you. You juggle academics, athletics, and community involvement with incredible grace. You are outstanding ambassadors for uOttawa, and we are immensely proud of each of you. It is my sincere hope that we have played a positive role in shaping your futures. As I've often said at events, embrace every moment of your time here. Leave with no regrets, cherish the people around you, and be thankful to everyone. This spirit will foster a positive and powerful sports culture that benefits both uOttawa and you as individuals. You will leave here a better person, prepared for whatever comes next.
Thank you from the bottom of my heart. I'll always be your biggest fan, forever cheering you on! Go Gee-Gees Go!
