RECAP: Ottawa falls to #1 Western in London
The nationally top-ranked Western Mustangs rode a big second half to defeat the Gee-Gees 50-17 at Homecoming in London.
Ottawa struck first with Amlicar Polk wasting no time ripping off a 59-yard touchdown scamper to put the Gee-Gees up 7-0 early in the first quarter.
Western would respond with an early touchdown of their own, before a Campbell Fair field goal from 41 yards gave Ottawa back the lead.
Down 14-10 at halftime, the Gee-Gees were within striking distance until a monster second half put the game away for Western. The Mustangs outscored the Gee-Gees 36-7 in the second half. Polk had Ottawa's final score of the day on a one-yard rush.
Polk finished the day with 140 yards rushing with the two touchdowns, averaging 8.2 yards per carry on 17 attempts.
A bright spot for the Gee-Gees offence was the play of quarterback Josh Janssen, making his first start at the university level. Janssen finished the day completing 79 percent of his passes (19-24) for 213 yards, while also picking up 14 rushing yards.
Ottawa's leading receiver on the day was Kerwin Guiste in his first game in garnet and grey after waiting out his transfer period from Carleton. The Ottawa native had four receptions for 54 yards.
Defensively, Max Charbonneau once again led the way with 5.5 total tackles, while Anas Faid had the Gee-Gees' lone sack on the afternoon.
Up next is the 54th Panda Game where Ottawa will meet Carleton at TD Place on Sunday, Oct. 1 at 12 p.m. at TD Place. Limited tickets are still available on Ticketmaster.
