RECAP: Gee-Gees drop back-and-forth affair with #6 Golden Hawks
The nationally sixth-ranked Laurier Golden Hawks visited TD Place on Saturday night and defeated the Gee-Gees 38-30 in a tightly contested affair
Laurier struck first on a short quarterback keeper to take an early 7-0 lead. Ottawa responded with a 28-yard Campbell Fair field goal, before Laurier added a rouge point on a missed field goal attempt to close the first frame.
A highlight reel double lateral flea flicker play saw Gee-Gees quarterback Josh Janssen threw a 46-yard strike to Nicholas Gendron to put Ottawa in scoring position. Amlicar Polk scampered in five yards to cap off the drive.
The Gee-Gees took the lead mid-way through the second quarter a conceded safety, before marching down field for another touchdown pass from Janssen to Gendron.
Laurier quickly rallied back and scored twice before the end of the half, taking a 21-19 lead into the break. The teams traded field goals in the third, before the Golden Hawks broke through two touchdowns to establish a commanding 38-22 lead.
The Gee-Gees battled back, finding the end zone again with Janssen connecting with Robin Collioud for the first touchdown in his young career. A two-point conversion pass to Malenfant was also good.
In the end, Laurier moved the ball with ease on an injury-laden Ottawa defence, gaining 519 yards of total offence. The Gee-Gees however, showed plenty competitiveness in their offensive attack in the loss.
"There were a lot of positives on offence tonight," said Gee-Gees head coach Marcel Bellefeuille. "We struggled getting consistent stops on the defensive end, but being able to move the ball and score kept us in it. At the end of the day, we're not happy with the result, but we'll get back to work breaking down the film and get better from it."
Janssen finished the night with 233 yards through the air completing 20 of 27 passes with two touchdowns and no interceptions. Polk carried the ball 18 times for 112 yards and a touchdown. Gendron finished with 82 yards on five receptions with a touchdown.
Defensively, Max Charbonneau had with 8.5 total tackles, while Patrick Cumberbatch had Ottawa's only takeaway of the evening with an interception.
Up next, the Gee-Gees will host the McMaster Marauders (2-5) at TD Place on Saturday, Oct. 14, the team's final regular season game at home. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. and tickets are available on Ticketmaster.
