RECAP: Gee-Gees drop scrappy battle with Gaels confirming return to Kingston on Saturday
In a low scoring affair, the Queen's Gaels defeated the Ottawa Gee-Gees 12-8 in Kingston on Saturday.
In the first half, the only difference between teams was a conceded safety that gave the Gaels a 2-0 lead at the half. Campbell Fair tried a 54-yard attempt before the half to take a one-point lead but missed wide.
Queen's extended their lead to 5-0 in the third quarter on a 29-yard Tyler Mullan field goal and later conceded a safety to give Ottawa their first points of the afternoon.
As the rain fell on Richardson Stadium, the Gaels found the endzone for their only major of the day. Ottawa would eventually find the end zone in the waning seconds of the game where Josh Janssen connected with Maxim Malenfant for the score. A missed two-point conversion closed the game, sealing the four-point win for the Gaels.
Ottawa had two missed scoring opportunities, throwing two interceptions in the end zone to take two possible go-ahead touchdowns off the board.
Janssen finished the day with 241 yards, a touchdown and the two interceptions. Charles Asselin ran for 48 yards and picked up another 98 yards receiving. Braeden Cruji and Baptiste Pollier led the way defensively with 5.5 tackles, while Kevin Victome had an interception as the Gee-Gees' only takeaway.
The loss confirms that Ottawa will return to Kingston exactly one week later to take on the Gaels in the OUA quarterfinals. Kickoff is set for Saturday at 1 p.m.
