RECAP: Gee-Gees down Warriors in Waterloo, improve to 2-1
The Ottawa Gee-Gees football team improved to 2-1 on the season with a 26-5 win over the Waterloo Warriors on the road on Saturday.
In another defensive showcase, the Ottawa defence did not concede a touchdown, with Waterloo only converting on one field goal all afternoon. The Warriors' other two points of the game came on a conceded safety.
Combined with last week's win at York, the Gee-Gees defence has not given up a touchdown in two full games and only twice overall this season (both against Western in week one).
Led by All-Canadian defensive back Eric Cumberbatch, the Gee-Gees defence had a game breaking touchdown in the third quarter. Cumberbatch stripped the ball out of the hands of the runner and took it back 57 yards for a touchdown. In all, Cumberbatch had four total tackles, a sack, the forced fumble and recovery for touchdown, as well as a pass breakup.
On the ground, Charles Asselin continues to be the toast of the nation, logging another massive tally of 184 yards and a touchdown. Asselin added 78 yards in the passing game, bringing his all-purpose total to 262 yards in the game. Asselin now ranks first in the OUA and U SPORTS with a whopping 163 rushing yards per game.
Given this, it was not a busy day in the passing game, as Ben Maracle only threw 18 passes, completing 10 for 159 yards with Asselin as the leading receiver.
In the kicking game, Zachary Copeland was a precise 4-for-4 on field goals, with a long of 38-yards.
