RECAP: #8 Gaels down Gee-Gees at home
The Ottawa Gee-Gees football team dropped their second game of the 2024 campaign by a 48-20 final score to the #8 Queen's Gaels at Gee-Gees Field on Saturday.
Special teams miscues cost Ottawa 14 points in the first quarter, with Queen's running a missed field goal back for a touchdown and later adding another touchdown on a blocked punt return.
The Gee-Gees got on the board with a 28-yard interception return for a touchdown by Patrick Cumberbatch. Patrick's twin brother, Eric Cumberbatch, had an interception on the next drive that teed up an Ottawa field goal.
Ben Maracle connected with Scott Fulton on a 21-yard touchdown pitch and catch. Zachary Copeland added a 31-yard field goal to close Ottawa's best quarter.
Queen's took full control in the second half, with a turning point coming on a 64-yard interception return for touchdown. Maracle exited the game a few plays after sustaining a hit on a run that drew an unnecessary roughness penalty. Josh Janssen entered the game in relief.
Apart from the big plays that burned the Gee-Gees, both teams were fairly evenly matched statistically on both sides of the ball.
"The biggest thing for us was the points we gave up on special teams early in the game, we were playing from behind. The turnovers and the special teams play made things tough today." – Gee-Gees head coach Marcel Bellefeuille.
Up next, Ottawa will take to the road to the nationally fifth-ranked and undefeated Windsor Lancers for a 4 p.m. kickoff next Saturday. The game will be streaming live on OUA.tv.
