Former Gee-Gees men’s hockey captain, and current professional hockey player, Yvan Mongo is set to run the second Completing the Shift Hockey Camp.
The camp provides minor hockey players aged 10-14 of any gender who identify as racialized, Indigenous and/or underserved in the National Capital Region with pleasant hockey experiences, professional coaching, and mentorship from those around the game. The goal is to foster inclusivity in hockey and help the sport become a safe haven for players of all backgrounds.

Description
As part of this free event, participants have the opportunity to share the ice with Yvan Mongo and his Gee-Gees men’s and women’s hockey teammates and learn from some of the best student-athletes in the National Capital Region. They leave the ice with tips and tricks that will help them improve as hockey players and find more joy in the game.
Off the ice, they hear from Yvan Mongo, his guest coaches and influential speakers with similar lived experiences as the campers. The focus is on fun and mentors lead age appropriate conversations on the state of hockey in Canada and share their reflections on the growth of the game while providing advice on how to handle difficult situations and offering problem solving tips.
Bob Dawson, a sportswriter and black hockey historian, will make a presentation on the history of the Coloured Hockey League in the Maritimes and its contributions to the development of hockey. In 1967, Dawson became the first black player in the Atlantic Intercollegiate Hockey League (currently the AUS) when he joined the Saint Mary's University Huskies.
The Gee-Gees want to contribute to ‘completing the shift’ of the hockey culture to make the game more fun and inclusive for all.
