RECAP: #6 Gee-Gees win over Gaiters, Evan Roy claims record for most career tries in program history
The Gee-Gees men's rugby team closed out a triple header on Matt Anthony Field on Saturday night. Playing host to Bishop's, the squad looked to add a third win to their record.
In the opening minutes, history was made as Evan Roy powered into the endzone. The try marked Roy's 12th career try, the most in program history.
"It's great to have that, but I'm just trying to score tries for the team," Roy said.
Ottawa head coach, James Flemming, had plenty of positives to add about Roy, "He's a pillar. He's a great veteran who's developed into a wonderful leader. We're proud to have him."
The try also put the first set of points on the board. Roy's brother, Glenn Roy stepped up for the convert. The Roy duo built a 14-0 lead 20 minutes into the game as Glenn Roy added another try and convert to the score.
Evan Roy added a second try to extend the lead and raise his career to 13. Zachary Auger added one of his own.
Bishop's started with a try of their own before adding a penalty kick. At halftime, the Ottawa had a 26-10 lead.
Connor Billo touched down first to get things started for Ottawa in the second half, then Jamie Armstrong showcased his athleticism with an impressive run over half the field for a try.
The Gaiters surged, finding back-to-back tries. They cut the lead to 40-27 with time running out.
The ball ended up in Gee-Gees hands, and it was Matthew Robinson who found the tryzone to call game.
"We haven't been 3-0 before and we plan to keep grinding and working on the details," Evan Roy said. "We're going to keep getting better, we're not even close to our full potential yet."
Ottawa improves to 3-0 with the 47-27 win. The Gee-Gees have a by week and will be rested when they head to McGill on Oct. 5th for their next game.
