RECAP: #6 men’s rugby returns to RSEQ final, set for rematch with ETS
The University of Ottawa men's rugby team has advanced to the RSEQ final for the third consecutive season. With a 24-12 win over the McGill Redbirds, the Gee-Gees earn the right to defend their conference title.
On Saturday, Matt Anthony Field was packed with fans cheering on the Gee-Gees as they took on the Redbirds in the RSEQ Semi-final. Earlier in the season, the Gee-Gees suffered their only loss of the year to the Redbirds, losing 37-21 (Oct. 5).
While it was an absolute battle between titans on the turf, Ottawa was the dominant force. Zach Auger was the first to touch down in the try zone and with a perfectly struck convert from Glenn Roy, the squad established the opening lead.
McGill responded, and things were tied up heading into halftime.
The Gee-Gees were able to separate themselves, a pair of tries from Evan Roy and another two converts from Glenn Roy put the game in favour of the Gee-Gees.
With 21-12 on the scoreboard, the Redbirds couldn't get the momentum in their favour as time was running out.
Glenn Roy stepped up for one last penalty kick, earning the three points and calling game.
The 24-12 win advances the Gee-Gees to the RSEQ final where the team has the opportunity to defend the title won in 2023 when they defeated the ETS Piranhas. The RSEQ championship rematch will take place on Nov. 2 at Collège Notre-Dame.
