RSEQ Cup Three sees Gee-Gees hold second in series
The Gee-Gees swim team travelled to Laval for the third RSEQ Cup event of 2021-22 on Sunday. The team placed second in the women's standings at the Cup and third in the men's standings, but secured enough points to remain in second in the combined standings after the three cup events.
Alexandre Perreault had a strong outing, highlighted by two new team records. He placed first in the 50-metre butterfly with a record-setting time of 24.06 and then helped the 4x50-metre medley relay team to a new program-best time of 1:41.54 to take second place at the meet.
Brendan Van Herk, Hugo Lemesle, and Nathan Schiffmann joined Perreault on the record-setting 200m medley relay. Van Herk, a third-year swimmer and human kinetics student from Cedar Springs, Ont., also earned a second place finish in the 200-metre butterfly event and Lemesle, a finance student from Nice, France, won the 200m breaststroke event. Lemesle, in his first year with the Gee-Gees, edged teammate Will Barrett by turning in the fastest final fifty metres for the breaststroke win.
For the Gee-Gees women, Adelle Yamashita-Ball continued her distance dominance by winning the 400-metre freestyle by over six seconds with a solid time of 4:15.14. Teammate Taylor Elliott, a first-year Gee-Gee from Pembrooke, Ont., earned key points in sixth position and then joined Yamashita-Ball and Rachel McInnes and Amy Meharg to win the 4x200-metre freestyle relay.
The 4x50-metre freestyle relay squad of Shaunna Walker-De Jong, Margaret Quinn, Rachel McInnes, and Maiya Dalton raced to second, placing one spot ahead of Laval to help maintain the team's second place standing. Gee-Gees veteran Lauren Shearer also topped a Rouge et Or swimmer to grab second place in the 200m breaststroke.
