RECAP: Gee-Gees earn second overall finish at RSEQ Cup #1
The Gee-Gees swim teams officially kicked off their 2023-24 RSEQ season with the first Cup meet of the calendar taking place at UQTR on Friday.
Ottawa posted a strong overall team performance with both the men's and women's teams finishing second overall in the meet.
On the men's side, first-year swimmer Alym Kurji impressed in his debut, winning the 50 and 100m backstroke events. Kurji's 50 back time of 25.52 broke the Gee-Gees short course team record, which has stood since 2018. Kurji also contributed to Ottawa's second place finish in the men's 200 medley relay.
For the women's team, Isabelle Melanson logged key results to begin her second year, finishing second in the 100m back (1:03.85) and fourth in the 50 back (29.53) individually. In relay action, Melanson's group with Amy Wang, Margaret Quinn, and Vanessa Thebarge finished third in the 4 x 50m free relay.
Hugo Lemesle picked up a win in the 200 breast (2:18.59) as well as contributed to second-place finishes in relays (4 x 50m free and 4 x 50m medley).
Selin Turan and Kate Hulford turned in strong fourth-place performances in the 400m freestyle, finishing with exact same time of 4:26.05, while Thebarge also finished fourth in the 50m butterfly (28.49).
Brendan Van Herk earned a second-place finish with a 2:03.45 in the 200m butterfly, Judson Nickerson finished third in the 50 fly with a time of 25.25. In the backstroke events, Evan Aguiar-Winter finished fourth (26.23) in the 50 back, while Ethan Fast also had a fourth-place finish (58.26) in the 100 back.
The Gee-Gees will be back in action for a Tri-Meet at Carleton between the Ravens and Waterloo on Saturday, Oct. 14.
