The Gee-Gees women's basketball team travelled to North Bay for a weekend double-header against the Nipissing Lakers. Earning two dominant wins, Ottawa improved their OUA record to 10-4 this week after also adding a win Wednesday against nationally sixth-ranked Carleton.
On Friday, the Gee-Gees overcame the Lakers by a final score of 88-43. Overall, the Gee-Gees shot just shy of 50 per cent from the field and outrebounded the Lakers 48-24 on the evening.
Brigitte Lefebvre-Okankwu logged the way in scoring with 26 points, and 10 rebounds to complete the double-double. Oksana Gouchie-Provencher had her most dominant performance of the season, tallying 17 points and 16 rebounds in the win. Senior guard Natalie Ligouri also had a key impact, scoring a season-high 11 points.
On Saturday afternoon, Ottawa capped off the weekend sweep with a 73-45 win. In the win, first-year guard Nadine Katumbayi led the way for the Gee-Gees, setting a new career-high with 19 points to go along with three assists and two rebounds.
In the second and third quarters, Ottawa climbed back from an early deficit, outscoring Nipissing 41-15 though the middle of the game. Lefebvre-Okankwu put in another dominant performance, finishing with 13 points and 16 rebounds.
First-year forward Emily Payne, also finished in double-figures, shooting 5-6 from the field for 10 points.
Up next, the Gee-Gees will host the Laurentian Voyageurs for the final weekend of the regular season before starting their playoff push. Friday's matchup is set for 5 p.m. and Saturday at 1 p.m. for the team's Seniors Celebration. Tickets are available online at tickets.geegees.ca
