The Gee-Gees women's basketball team opened their 2023-24 OUA regular season with a 57-49 loss to the Guelph Gryphons on Friday night.
Ottawa mounted a comeback effort in the fourth quarter, including taking a 49-48 lead with two and a half minutes remaining in the game. Guelph closed strong to earn the eight-point win.
In all, the Gee-Gees struggled shooting from the field, finishing 15-69 and were outrebounded 50-36. Guelph used their advantage inside to outscore Ottawa 32-16 in the paint.
Defensively, the Gee-Gees were active, particularly in the backcourt where Ariane Saumure and Natsuki Szczokin had 10 combined steals of the team's 17.
In all, Saumure and Emily Payne led the way for Ottawa with 11 points apiece. Saumure rounded out her stat line with six rebounds and four steals. Payne also had five rebounds on the night.
